I had the opportunity to shoot my first sports event last week. Hewitt-Trussville took on Oak Mtn in Trussville, AL. Hewitt-Trussville won 63-0.
I had never really shot anything so fast paced, so it was quite the learning experience. My instinct told me to shoot lots of images on continuous burst, and while it worked, it wasn’t really ideal, and not just because it left me with the daunting task of processing almost 5000 photos. My camera’s auto focus works pretty well, however it can’t adjust in the middle of a burst. I wound up missing focus on a lot of great shots because the everything would start off perfectly framed and focused, as soon as the play moved significantly closer or further away from me things would quickly start to blur out.
Other than that, everything went well and I still wound up with tons of great shots. I hope to be able to do this again soon.
On a side note, the AI noise reduction feature in Lightroom works phenomenally. Even though the field was lit up really well, since I had the shutter speed cranked up so much I had to raise the ISO to compensate and was left with quite a bit of noise. I didn’t really experiment with lowering the shutter speed to see if I could reduce the ISO, though. Maybe next time. I don’t really want to rely on the noise reduction in Lightroom, but it’s nice to know it’s there if I need it.
