Photographing the people of New Orleans offers a dynamic and captivating experience, especially in areas like Jackson Square where the city’s vibrant energy is on full display. This past visit, I focused on capturing both the tourists and locals who help define the spirit of the city. From street performers dazzling crowds with their acts to marriage proposals unfolding in real time, there’s no shortage of moments that reflect the diverse stories present in NOLA. Every face tells a different tale, whether it’s the excitement of visitors or the unflappable cool of those who call the city home.
One of the highlights was simply people-watching in Jackson Square. I spent hours observing the ebb and flow of the crowd, catching everything from an entertaining argument to quiet moments shared between strangers. Speaking with locals added depth to the experience, as they shared their stories of the wild things they see during tourist season. Every visit to New Orleans allows me to focus on a new aspect of the city, whether it’s the architecture, street art, or the people. This time, the people were front and center, and their stories—whether captured in a fleeting smile or a candid conversation—are what make this city so incredibly photogenic.
